About the role: The Utilities & Maintenance Manager is responsible for leading all maintenance operations and utility systems performance within a GMP-regulated manufacturing facility. This role combines hands-on engineering expertise with people leadership, overseeing a team of maintenance technicians and mechanics while owning the reliability and optimization of critical systems including boilers, chillers, water purification, and sanitization.

This leader will build and scale a world-class maintenance program, driving preventive and predictive maintenance strategies, improving equipment uptime, and ensuring all facility systems operate safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with GMP and FDA regulatory standards.

This role is fully on-site in our new Mesa, AZ facility.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of maintenance technicians and mechanics, establishing clear expectations, performance standards, and accountability.
  • Build staffing plans, schedules, and on-call coverage to support a 24/7 or extended-hour manufacturing environment.
  • Foster a culture of safety, ownership, and continuous improvement across the maintenance function.

Utilities & Facilities Engineering Ownership

  • Own the operation, reliability, and compliance of all critical utility systems, including:
  • Boilers and steam distribution systems
  • Chillers, HVAC, and environmental controls
  • Reverse Osmosis Systems
  • Sanitization systems
  • Ensure all systems meet performance, quality, and regulatory requirements for GMP manufacturing.

Maintenance Strategy & Execution

  • Design, implement, and continuously improve preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
  • Establish and track maintenance KPIs.
  • Oversee execution of all maintenance work (preventive, corrective, emergency), ensuring minimal disruption to production.

Engineering & Continuous Improvement

  • Lead root cause analysis and implement corrective/preventive actions for recurring equipment or system failures.
  • Drive reliability-centered maintenance and continuous improvement initiatives to increase efficiency and reduce downtime.
  • Support capital projects, including equipment installation, commissioning, and validation (IQ/OQ/PQ).

Compliance & Systems Management

  • Ensure all maintenance and engineering activities comply with GMP, FDA, OSHA, and internal quality standards.
  • Own and optimize task systems, ensuring accurate asset tracking, work orders, and maintenance history.
  • Maintain audit-ready documentation and support internal/external inspections.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Production, Quality, and Warehouse teams to support scale-up, process improvements, and capacity planning.
  • Manage external vendors and contractors for specialized maintenance and facility services.
  • Other duties as assigned by the VP of Manufacturing Operations.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial Engineering, or related field preferred.
  • 7+ years of experience in maintenance, facilities engineering, or utilities within a GMP-regulated environment (pharma, biotech, cosmetics, or food).
  • 2+ years of leadership experience managing maintenance teams in a manufacturing setting.
  • Strong technical expertise in:
  • Boilers and steam systems
  • Chillers, HVAC, and environmental systems
  • Reverse Osmosis and sanitation systems
  • Mechanical, electrical, and control systems (PLC knowledge a plus)
  • Proven experience building and managing preventive/predictive maintenance programs.
  • Strong understanding of GMP, FDA, and OSHA requirements.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics and engineering drawings.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead continuous improvement initiatives.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform repetitive movements.
  • Ability to stand, bend, and climb for extended periods.
  • Comfortable working in manufacturing environments with exposure to chemicals, powders, and equipment noise.
