Class Definition

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To supervise, review, and evaluate the work of a staff of Utility

Maintenance Specialists assigned to RlSP Headquarters and other State Police Facilities.

Coordinate with the Assistant Administrator/Facilities and Operations or designee to ensure that daily work assignments/projects/tasks are completed on time and as required. To perform maintenance, custodial, landscaping and snow management work at RlSP properties. Maintain all areas of Division buildings and their grounds and the equipment used to do so.  Perform basic maintenance/cleaning of Division vehicles. To do other related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work under the supervision of the Assistant Administrator/Facilities and

Operations and sworn officers. Work is subject to review in process and upon completion.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Coordinates, assigns, supervises, and reviews the work of a staff of Utility

Maintenance Specialists engaged in performing various maintenance and custodial services.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

  • Coordinate/schedule/inspect daily work assignments performed by assigned staff.
  • Oversee and inspect the work of private vendors and report progress to supervisory personnel.
  • Monitor supplies/equipment and order same when needed.
  • Provide appropriate training to staff in the operation of equipment/tools and related safety procedures.
  • Ensures that equipment is properly operated, maintained, and secured when not in use.
  • Review weekly time sheets to verify accuracy and completeness.
  • Assist in the preparation of annual performance appraisals/performance development plans for assigned staff, when required.
  • Perform custodial services including, but not limited to, floor and stair sweeping/vacuuming/washing &

waxing, building trash disposal. Cleaning and disinfection of offices, restrooms, kitchens, holding/cell

blocks, public and garage area fixtures (toilets, showers, sinks, mirrors, counters, benches). Daily

inspection of buildings and equipment.

  • Restock restrooms, kitchens and designated areas with products and supplies.
  • Clean and maintain garage areas.
  • Maintain generator logs.
  • Maintain all power equipment.
  • Keep all lawn areas properly cut. Maintain trash-free lawn and parking areas.
  • Snow management, clear/ice melt walkways, clear snow from vehicles, direct contractors.
  • Perform minor repairs as needed.
  • Perform minor carpentry repairs as needed.
  • Dust/polish furniture.
  • Wax/buff wooden and/or tile floors.
  • Maintain supply of bottled water in dispensers. Replace bottles as needed.
  • Replace inoperative light bulbs.
  • Wash/clean windows.
  • Inspect building interior/exterior to assess needed repairs.
  • Paint interior/exterior of buildings at reasonable heights.
  • Escort building inspectors.
  • Plaster and make repairs to damaged walls.
  • Cement and make repairs to walkways, foundations, etc.
  • Wash exterior of Division vehicles and vacuum/clean vehicle interior, as required.
  • Will need to be available for the after-hours emergency calls when needed
  • Perform other tasks, as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES: The ability to plan, organize, review, and evaluate the

work of assigned staff; The ability to organize and prioritize work assignments and meet required

deadlines; Effective written and verbal communication skills; A working knowledge of the equipment and

methods used in cleaning and custodial work; A working knowledge of building construction trades such

as painting, plastering, carpentry, etc., Working knowledge of the equipment and tools used for the above

and skill in handling them; Familiarity with equipment used for grounds maintenance and the ability to

maintain such equipment; The ability to carry out instructions; and related knowledge, skills and

capacities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Education: High School diploma or equivalent (GED) and;

Experience: Such as may have been gained through employment in a position performing janitorial work or grounds maintenance work involving the performance of one or more building maintenance trades, as specified; Experience working in a secure, public safety facility;

Or, any combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.

Supplemental Information

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Prior to appointment, the selected candidate must successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation conducted by the Rhode Island State Police.
After appointment to the position, the selected candidate must successfully complete a 130 working day probationary period.
At the time of appointment, must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
