This is a highly responsible position in the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet. The employee is expected to perform all duties to the best of their ability, act in a responsible manner at all times, demonstrate leadership qualities, and treat all staff, youth, and persons with respect. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Provides overall management of all maintenance at Adair Youth Development and Juvenile Detention Center (AYD&JDC) within Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) and provides direct supervision to staff in the maintenance of facility, grounds, and/or all mechanical systems; and performs other duties as required.
  • Manages and supervises the maintenance of all buildings including heating, air conditioning, electronic systems, plumbing, carpentry and welding for AYD&JDC. Supervises staff, approves leave time and conducts performance evaluations.
  • Oversees the preventative maintenance on and in the operation of HVAC, refrigeration, ventilation, electrical systems, kitchen utilities and associated equipment. Responsible to maintain supply inventories and records.
  • Oversees general maintenance and upkeep of the grounds.
  • Recommends improvements in maintenance procedures according to state and DJJ policies and procedures. Consults with central office Construction and Real Properties concerning operations.
Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: High school graduate.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Seven years of building maintenance, grounds maintenance, general trades, skilled trades, moving services or mechanical maintenance experience.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Formal training in industrial arts, horticulture, building maintenance, grounds maintenance, general trades, skilled trades, mechanical engineering, or a related field will substitute for the experience on a year-for- year basis.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Experience in one of the above or related fields will substitute for the education on a year-for-year basis.

Working Conditions
Incumbents in this job title may be required to use hand tools and lift items in excess of 20 pounds.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
